Real-Time Strategy Games Powered by AI

While the use of generative AI for video games is relatively new, it has already begun to change the way gamers play. For example, Google’s AI Experiments feature a virtual orchestra conducted by an artificial intelligence, a “teachable machine,” and a handwriting generator. However, not all game designers are sold on the promise of generative AI. Josh Sawyer, studio design director at Obsidian Entertainment, which made narratively acclaimed games like Pentiment and Fallout: New Vegas, says that while some of these demos are impressive, he’s not ready to start using them in his own video games.

He adds that players want games to work, and they don’t care about the underlying technology as much as the hype would suggest. Instead of generating artificially intelligent dialogue, he’d rather spend time focusing on the overall gameplay and experience. Whether that involves making a game more challenging or creating more engaging environments, Sawyer believes that the future of gaming isn’t necessarily in AI, but in the interaction between humans and computers. It’s a shift that will require more attention to player feedback and engagement.
